Kambo (Kambô) refers to the secretions of Phyllomedusa bicolor, aka the giant monkey tree frog. Originating in the Amazon Rain Forest, tribes have used the frog’s secretions as a medicine for a very long time. The secretions are placed onto freshly burned holes in the skin to generate a powerful purging effect.
Although there is a wide range of possible reactions, the most common are rapid heart rate, sweating, swelling of the face, sweeping blood pressure irregularities, diarrhea, and vomiting (lots of vomiting). Surprisingly this seriously uncomfortable experience produces some incredibly positive therapeutic and medicinal benefits, from the treatment of autoimmunity and chronic pain to infectious diseases, HIV, and herpes, to depression and trauma.
My first Kambo experience was in 2014 while in Peru with Pulse Tours. My second wasn’t until March of 2016; my third and fourth following within a couple months. That last one held the most complex implications for me, as I approached it with a greater sense of understanding as to how psychologically deep the kambo experiences can be. That last one was an encounter with death; that last one was an encounter with a fear of dying wrapped contortedly around the event at the nexus of my PTSD; that last one was facilitated by today’s guest, Tobias Ton.
Tobias Ton is a Kambo facilitator based in Berlin, Germany. His work with the Amazonian ‘frog medicine’ takes a “more-therapeutic-than-traditional” approach as it is intended to specifically accommodate people living under the burdens of Western industrialized civilization.
He specializes in intensive one-on-one sessions and on the synergetic integration of various other healing modalities, addressing the underlying energetic issues that manifest as physical and psychological disease. He advocates a holistic and deeply spiritual understanding of Kambô that goes both beyond traditional indigenous cosmology and beyond the mechanistic interpretations of a supposed “frog poison vaccination”. Instead, he recognizes it as the highly intelligent and deeply benign spirit of an animal that can generously impart its own strength, serenity and extraordinary capabilities of transformation.
Tobias is on the show for this episode to teach us all about Kambo, from the origins and biomedical science to the underlying spiritual root of disease Kambo helps to cleanse.
