What Sacred Tobacco Asks of You | Jason Grechanik

Jason Grechanik on sacred tobacco, Adventures Through The Mind podcast episode 213 promo artworkJason Grechanik spent nearly a decade living and working with the Shipibo of Peruvian Amazon.

He is now a is a tabaquero and plant dieta facilitator (see his website Nicotiana Rustica) as well as the host of The Universe Within podcast.

We have covered nicotine In different ways throughout the arc of this show, but this will be the first episode that is explicitly about tobacco as a medicine.

Tobacco is something especially interesting to me and has been for a while because my exposure and exploration of plant medicine traditions, especially those working with ayahuasca, gave me a view of tobacco that was very different than the one I grew up with—that of tobacco as a sacred medicine rather than a poison.

However, the potential sacredness of tobacco as a medicine does not erase the realities of its toxicity or the dangers of addiction and disease generated by the consumption of tobacco. This creates a complex dynamic that thankfully Jason Grechanik  is on the show to explore with us.

Jason joins us to discuss both what the medicine of tobacco offers and what it asks of us.

We explore the origins stories of tobacco as the plant of the creator; some of the different methods of administration for tobacco; why smoking is the worst way to consume it (such as hapé and ambil); and the differences between tobacco species and preparation methods in terms of their impact on health.

We also talk about the realities of dependence and toxicity; the genuine risk of death if certain preparations are consumed wrong; and why “natural” doesn’t mean safe.

Enjoy!

‼️ This episode is educational. It does not recommend using tobacco or nicotine in any form. ‼️

Amentara is a credible source for legal psychoactive plants and extracts, most notably the Amanita muscaria mushroom, as well as kanna, blue lotus, and others. I’ve experimented with their Amanita muscaria microdosing supply with some genuinely interesting results, and I’ve found their kanna extract to be a good alternative to alcohol on nights out while I’m taking an extended pause from drinking.
