5-Methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (aka 5-MeO-DMT) is a psychedelic tryptamine. Although closely related to DMT, these are two very different molecules producing two very different experiences.
People call it the God Molecule because it can, apparently, dissolve all perceivable duality from reality and suspend one’s awareness is an infinite, all-encompassing totality of being, which is often described as becoming (or realising we have always been) God.
You may have also heard it referred to as Toad medicine, in relationship to the administration of 5-MeO-DMT into the system through smoking the secretion of the Bufo Alvarius toad.
Over the last few years, 5-MeO-DMT has massively grown in popularity. In fact, I have even featured discussion on 5-MeO-DMT on multiple different episodes here on the podcast (Episodes 5, 13, and 33) and have another one in the pipeline, with James Oroc. This rising popularity is both an exciting and a troubling time. It is exciting as its calling attention to the potentials of a molecule of extraordinary effect, including both religiously and therapeutically. It is troubling because the rising polarity of “toad medicine” has given rise to a culture of travelling shamans or facilitators with, perhaps, questionable methods.
Furthermore, it is also troubling because experiences of 5-MeO-DMT are about as far away from our usual experience of reality and the self as we can get. How does one make sense of being God without damaging themselves psychologically? How do we integrate such an encounter? This is an important question as what such an experience brings will be defined by what we take from it.
Today’s guest, Rafael Lancelotta, is on the show to unpack 5-MeO-DMT. He is a graduate student at the University of Wyoming studying Mental Health Counseling graduating in May 2018, with a particular focus on the therapeutic potentials of psychedelics. He is also the administrator of 5meodmt.org, which is a forum dedicated to forming community discussions on harm reduction, integration, and safe practices around 5-MeO-DMT.
Rafael Lanelotta joins us to talk to us about 5-MeO-DMT – chemically, neurologically, psychologically, culturally, and therapeutically. He also comments on the current rise of toad retreats and his particular concerns over the weekend retreat model. Finally, he gives us some important tips on the 5-MeO-DMT integration process.
Enjoy.
